G5. Pit Nine is a radioactive-waste burial ground. From 1967 to 1969 approximately 150,000 cubic feet of plutonium-contaminated and low-level radioactive wastes were buried here. Poor recordkeeping and failed waste containment have made Pit Nine a daunting remediation challenge for engineers, who must now sample these wastes, exhume them, and treat them thermally
