G3. New Underground Vault for Storing Low-level Radioactive Waste.

G3. New Underground Vault for Storing Low-level Radioactive Waste. This vault contains 12 large cells, each 55 feet long, 150 feet wide, and 30 feet high. The first facility of its kind in the United States, this vault system has replaced shallow land burial in engineered trenches at the Savannah River Site. The vault depicted here began storing waste in September 1994. When full, it will be covered with clay to form a mound with a plant cover. E Area Vault, Solid Waste Management Division, Savannah River Site, South Carolina. 7 January 1994.
