About Northwatch
Northwatch is a public interest group in northeastern Ontario. Priorities are environmental protection and public participation in environmental decision-making; key issues are mining, forestry, waste and energy, including nuclear waste.
20:00 to 21:00 (Amsterdam, Berlin, Bern, Rome, Stockholm, Vienna)
Topic: Burying Trouble: Deep Geological Repositories for Nuclear Waste
Description: Many countries, including Canada, are considering burying highly radioactive nuclear waste deep underground. This workshop will describe some of the common elements of these proposals, briefly describe several countries’ proposals, and identify some of the outstanding technical challenges. The workshop provides background information for the final workshop in the series.
Presenter: Brennain Lloyd, Northwatch

What is a webinar?
A webinar is an on-line meeting, presentation or workshop. There are many different versions of a "webinar" depending on the system being used, but the basics are that information is presented through the internet, and is shown on the computer screen of all the webinar participants ("participants" are the people who have joined the webinar; "presenters" are those making the presentations) who have joined the webinar through an internet site. Depending on the particular intenet service, participants may be able to "chat" by sending text messages to each other or to the presenter, including questions to the presenter, and the presenters may be able to share their computer screens, show presentations slides, or "live stream" using the camera attached to their computer to appear on the participants computer screen.
Why are these workshops being done as webinars?
There are several reasons we decided to offer these workshops on-line but the two main reasons are that winter conditions make travel to in-person workshops difficult, and the number of communities being studied as potential burial sites for nuclear waste make it hard to provide local workshops in all of the communities on a regular basis. Meeting in person is great, but we are hoping that these on-line workshops will help keep in touch and continue sharing information, while reducing the amount of travel required of everyone, including workshop participants.
Where can I find out more about nuclear waste and the search for a burial site in Canada?
There are several web sites you can visit to learn more about nuclear waste in Canada. The web site Know Nuclear Waste has information about the Canadian nuclear industry's current search for a burial site for high level nuclear fuel waste. NuclearWaste.ca has background information about the problem of nuclear waste and past efforts to find a burial location in northern Ontario. The site www.bruce-nuclear-waste-burial.ca has information about Ontario Power Generation's proposal to bury operating and refubishment wastes - both low and intermediate level - underneath the Bruce nuclear generating station. All of these sites have links to additional information sources and organizations. Or you can call us at Northwatch - tel 704 497 0373 or 877 553 0481.
