B2. Empty Spent Fuel Pool. This pool is designed to contain the most radioactive material on earth: irradiated nuclear fuel. When pool construction is complete, irradiated fuel will be loaded into it and submerged under fourteen feet of water. The water cools the fuel while also acting as a shield against the intense radiation that the fuel gives off. If the water is lost, the irradiated fuel will overheat and fission products will escape.
